Diary of a Pinterest Manager:
Why Followers Don’t Matter
Many businesses venturing into the Pinterest realm often find themselves fixated on follower counts, stuck on the idea of applying the same metrics used in typical social media platforms. However, Pinterest operates under a different set of rules—it's not social media; it's a search engine. As a Pinterest manager, I often find myself explaining this to potential clients, and its a fairly common assumption, so I get it! One of the reasons I love Pinterest in fact, is because you don’t need followers to grow! It’s such a breath of fresh air to put effort into a platform, knowing you have the knowledge to get your content in front of the right people, and aren’t just scrambling to guess at what the algorithm gods might want you to sacrifice that day in order to get views (*cough cough* looking at you, IG).
Finding success beyond the followers metric:
The key to success on Pinterest lies not in the number of followers but in understanding and harnessing the platform's unique opportunity to reach people who are actively searching for what you have to offer! Unlike other social media platforms, followers don't impact reach in the same way. Pinterest moving into 2024 is focused on pushing out content that is keyword focused and valuable to the audience viewing it. The tactics that used to work even 5 years ago, dont work anymore.
Followers are still nice to have, and certainly offer a form of social proof, but are not the end all be all. Instead, the focus should shift towards the numbers that really matter. These metrics are impressions, engagement, audience, and outbound clicks. It’s not about how many are following you, but how many are discovering and engaging with your content. If your content is great, the hard part is done! now let’s get it in front of people!
